I fully intended to do a search at the courthouse to see what I can officially find. I also have the phone number of the granddaughter of the woman who built the house and am hoping that once we get settled that she can come over and share anything she knows about the house. Until then this is what we (think) we know about it:
-The house was built in the 1920’s. So far we’ve heard 1922, 1926 and 1928 (I think it’s probably 1928).
-It was one of the first houses in the city to have central heating
-The house was once split into three separate apartments:
Our bedroom (with the exterior door) was an efficiency apartment (the kitchen was where our closet is), the man cave was a ‘terrace level’ apartment, and the rest of the house was another. (There was a forth apartment if you count the cottage.)
-We might only be the fifth owner of the house, although with it being so many apartments through the years many people have lived there.
-The woman who built the house was a single mother (somewhat unusual in the 1920’s) and made her income working as a seamstress and from the rent from the apartments.
-Our bedroom might have been a doctor’s office at one point.
-The cottage was built at least by the 1940s as there were newspapers from that era used as insulation in the ceiling.
-One of the previous owner’s daughters had a wedding or at least a wedding reception in the house.
The house has the original floors (recently refinished), moldings, windows (some with leaded glass), dual faucet sink, bathtub and medicine cabinet in the hall bathroom, glass doorknobs, telephone stand, brass turn doorbell (that I’m hoping we can fix We fixed it!) and lots of character.
I hope that I’m able to find out more specifics about the history of the house in the future!
